Ozone Cell vs Ozone Plate: What’s the Difference?
There are several different ways to generate ozone. To name two, there is corona discharge and ultraviolet. At A2Z Ozone, we use ozone plates and cells to create a corona discharge, which brings about the ozone gas.
Are there advantages and disadvantages?
There are differences in these two approaches to creating ozone with corona discharge. We can explain what the differences are for each. That may help you determine why one may be more beneficial for your ozone application. Note, that sometimes the ozone cell is called an ozone tube.
Ozone Cell Features
Advantages:
- Better control of the ozone compared to the ozone plates
- Longer lasting compared to the ozone plates
- Less heat created by ozone cells than by ozone plates
- Replacing the ozone cells is easy and inexpensive
Disadvantages:
- Limited space within the ozone cell allows for less ozone production
- So ozone cells do not produce as much ozone as ozone plates
Ceramic Ozone Plates Features
Advantages:
- Strong ozone production
- Air travels over the ozone plate, making more ozone from the available oxygen
- Replacing ozone plates is easy and inexpensive
- You can extend the life of the plate with a cleaning (Ours is the only plate that we know of that you can reuse in this manner.)
Disadvantages:
- Shorter lifespan than an ozone cell
- Requires more cooling than the ozone cell

How long do corona discharge ozone generators last?
The ozone cells and ceramic ozone plates have a great deal to do with how long the unit lasts. That is because they are responsible for ozone creation. You can expect the ozone plates to last up to 2 years, or 2,000 hours of use. If they do not last that long, it may be due to a humid environment. If you look at the slits in the side, you can see the plates glow purple when they are working.
Ozone cells tend to last longer as long as the unit does not experience rough handling. That is because the quartz crystal within the cell can break. So, careful storage and handling helps for units that use either cells or plates. We have seen customers that get one year of use out of an ozone generator, while other customers get 10+ years. Fortunately, the ozone parts are replaceable. We sell those on our website and they are fairly simple to replace.
